Idaho Chess History
Steven M Allie - 1888 Idaho State Co-Champion
By Stewart Q Sutton
Stephen Allie did not play many games in Southern Idaho. His tournament appearances were limited to the 1987 Western Idaho Open and the 1988 Idaho Closed. As I recall, he won games against Larry Parsons in these back-to-back tournaments; this was a rather shocking result as Larry was a master at the time.
Stephen may not have played much in Idaho, but If you can obtain a copy of the July, 1976 issue of Chess Life and Review, you can see a picture of Stephen on page 377. His team, Washington High School, from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, won the 1976 National High School Championship, held in Cleveland, Ohio.
At this time, Allie was the third highest rated scholastic player in Wisconsin, with a rating of 1755. His rating went over 1800 because of his results in the National High School Championship.
This scholastic event was not Allie’s first time on the national stage, either. He was also on the winning 1973 National Junior High School Championship team.
